Comparing NB-IoT and LoRa WAN – a project in the testbed

A number of students of KTH are studying the differences and comparing NB-IoT and LoRaWan in the Urban ICT Arena for their master thesis.

Narrowband-IoT and LoRaWan are both compelling IoT technologies, at the moment primarily used for sensors in an urban environment. This study will help us evaluate these different technologies and see which is more fit for use in an urban environment, in terms of coverage, energy consumption, cost, and reliability. The goal of the project is to have a nonbiased benchmark and see how their performances in an urban environment are different to their theoretical values in ideal environment.

The project will provide some benchmarks of the two technologies, which will benefit our understanding of the advantages and limitations of these two technologies. As a result, engineers can select the most suitable technology when they are designing an IoT system. In addition, it will also motivate the researchers to improve the IoT technology to have a better performance.

While not being a traditional project within the Urban ICT Arena, we are still a part of it since it uses our testbed. We are eagerly waiting for the result.
